The man took them to a house that looked like it had been ground zero for a good amount of the fighting. Which made sense to Daniels. The occupants had clearly been allied with Tully, if they were the ones hiding the satphone. They wouldâve been the ones to fight back the hardest.
It hadnât worked out for them.
The front of the structure was riddled with large caliber bullet holes. The machine guns on the backs of the Cornerstone technicals had raked it hard.
The inside still stank of spent propellant. And faintly of shit.
Five bodies lay, in various poses of death. The structure had already been cleared by Cornerstone, and the weapons that the five dead men had used to defend themselves were stacked up in a corner, away from the dead bodies.
The man that led them into the house trembled, but, to his credit, remained focused on his task. He led Daniels and Griesi and two other operatives upstairs into one of the bedrooms. Here, a dingy, gray carpet covered the floors under a collection of mattresses with tossed bedding.
The man went into the far corner of the room and began to hunch down.
âStop,â Daniels said. âThatâs far enough. Iâm assuming itâs under a floorboard?â
The man stood, raised his hands, and nodded, backing away from the corner.
Daniels gestured to Griesi. The Cornerstone man stalked to the corner and squatted down. He used a knife to peel back a corner of the carpet that was already obviously loose. Beneath it, there was a floorboard that had been cut away.
He jammed his knife into the gap and pried the floorboard up. Then peered into the cavity below. âOne satphone,â he reported. âAnd a pistol.â
Daniels gave their prisoner a sidelong glance. âYou werenât intending to use that on me, were you?â
The man quaked, his knees looking like they might go out. âNo, sir! I promise! I was just trying to show you where the satphone was!â
Daniels put his hand on the manâs shoulder. âAlright. Okay. Calm yourself down.â
Griesi spent a moment further inspecting the interior, and Daniels knew he was checking for booby-traps. When he decided there wasnât a trap, he scooped up the pistol and the satphone and took them to Daniels.
Daniels ignored the pistol. Griesi checked the chamberâloadedâand slid it into the back of his waistband, beneath his plate carrier. Daniels took the satphone, extended the antenna, and turned it on. The little screen blinked into life.
Daniels was quite familiar with these little devices. They seemed to be all over the place nowadays. The Project Hometown bunkers each had a quantity of them. It was a good sign that Tully had given one to Mosquero. That meant the town meant something to him. Otherwise he mightâve just left them with some radios and repeaters. Or nothing at all.
Daniels scrolled down the screen. Only one number appeared, which was a common occurrence. The satphone was only used to contact Tully directly, so only one number would be present in the call log.
Daniels turned away from the others, looking out the window of the upstairs bedroom.
